Sound of Sliver is a daily music game at soundofsliver.com, made by Factory Design LLC. In this policy, "we" and "us" means Factory Design LLC.
There are no accounts, and the game never asks for your name. This page says what the game does collect, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
What you give us
- Your initials. When you finish a day you can type two or three letters for the leaderboard. They are shown publicly next to your score. If you skip them, your score is still saved and shows as ??? instead.
- Your email address, only if you sign up for updates. We store it with the time you signed up, your IP address and your browser's user agent (the line of text that names your browser and device). We keep the list ourselves, on a server we rent and run.
- Feedback. If you write to us through CONTACT / FEEDBACK in the game, we store your message and, if you add one, a reply-to email address. The message is stored with your initials if you have set them, your player id, your IP address, your user agent and your approximate location.
- Votes. When you vote for a future theme or request a playlist, we store the vote with your player id, your IP address and your user agent. Playlist requests also store your initials and approximate location.
- A recovery code, if you make one to move your progress to another device. We store the code with your player id, your IP address and your user agent. The code stops working after 30 days.
- A reminder subscription, if you turn on reminders. Your browser gives us an address at its push service and the keys needed to send to it. We don't attach your player id to it.
What your browser sends as you play
- A player id. The first time you open the game, your browser makes an id from the time and a random string and keeps it on your device. It has nothing to do with your name. It goes along with your saved scores and most of the events below, so we can connect one device's days for streaks, bonuses and the leaderboards that add up many days.
- Your scores. Each saved score stores your initials, your score, the difficulty, how long you took, a row of marks for how each song went, your daily streak, how you shared (if you did), and your player id. It also stores your IP address, your user agent, your approximate location, and how and when your device first found the game: the site that linked you (its domain only, not the full page address) and any campaign or share codes in that first link.
- Game events. As you play, the game sends short notes about what happened, such as a game started or finished, how each song went and which wrong answers were picked, a menu opened, or an error. These carry your player id. Most also carry your device type (iOS, Android or desktop) and your approximate location. These event records don't include your IP address or your full user agent.
- Bonus claims. When you share, send a challenge, finish someone else's challenge or press a follow button, we record it with your player id, your IP address and, for most of these, your user agent. When someone plays from your link, we check that they are on a different device before paying a bonus, and for share and challenge bonuses that they are on a different IP address too. We also record that their device arrived through your link.
- Play counts. Every start and finish also adds one to a simple counter that has no id attached.
- Server logs. Like most websites, our web server logs each request: your IP address, the time, the address you asked for (including any codes in the link), the page that sent you there, and your user agent.
Your approximate location
We work out a city, region and country from your IP address using a service called ip-api.com. Our server sends your IP address to it and reuses the answer for up to 30 days, so it doesn't ask every time. That request travels over an unencrypted connection. The game never asks for your device's location, and the site blocks pages from asking for it.
What's public
- The leaderboards show your initials (or ???), your score, and a city label. In the US the label is your city and state. Elsewhere it is your city and country. Depending on the board, they also show the difficulty, your time or how many days you've played. They never show your IP address or your player id.
- Links you share carry a short sender code made from your player id, but not the id itself. The code is the same on every link from your device, so anyone who sees several of your links can tell they came from the same device.
- A challenge link also shows your initials, your score, the day, the difficulty, how each song went, and the last four characters of your player id.
- If you finish a day from someone's challenge link, your result goes back to them: your initials (taken from your saved scores if you didn't enter any, or ??? if there are none), your score, whether you beat them, and when. Anyone who has that challenge link can see it.
What stays on your device
The game uses your browser's local storage to remember things between visits. It keeps:
- your player id, the days you've played, your points and your streak
- your initials
- your progress on each day, and settings like difficulty and sound
- which screens and notices you've already seen
- small receipts for your saved scores, so you can change your initials later, and the tokens that prove a score came from a real game
- how your device first found the game, which is sent along with your scores
- your recovery code, if you made one
- whether you've signed up for email (the address itself isn't kept on your device)
- the challenges you've sent and which results you've already seen
- your SURVIVOR results
- words from the themes you voted for, used to recommend days
- which share and follow bonuses you've already been paid
- whether you've finished your first day
- if you open SURVIVOR, a copy of the key our site uses to talk to Apple Music; if you connect Apple Music, Apple's MusicKit keeps your Apple Music sign-in on your device, and the game remembers which of your playlists is Apple's Replay All Time
It also uses session storage for a few flags that last only while the tab is open. The rest stays until you clear it. Some of it is sent to us as described above.
Cookies
The game's own code sets no cookies for players. There are no advertising cookies, and no ad or social media tracking pixels on the site. That includes TikTok, Meta and Google tags. The one cookie in our code belongs to the owner's private admin tool and is never set for players.
Analytics
We count visits with Umami, an open-source analytics tool. We run our own copy of it at analytics.factory.fyi, and your browser reaches it through our own domain. It receives page views, your user agent and the game's events. A page view includes the full page address, with any codes in the link, and the address of the page that sent you there, as much of it as your browser passes on. Our server passes your IP address along to it so it can count unique visitors and estimate their city, region and country.
It isn't sent your player id. Share events carry your short sender code, the link's share id, and the score and rank the share showed. The event for each visit, and the one for your first finished day, carry the sender, share and campaign codes of the link that brought you. Our own records note which player id made each share link, so on our side a share event can be matched back to a device.
Other services your browser talks to
- Apple. Most song previews play straight from Apple's servers and most album artwork loads from Apple, so Apple sees your IP address while you use the game. Our site tells Apple only that the request came from soundofsliver.com, not which page. Apple's own privacy policy covers what Apple does with that.
- Apple Music. Opening SURVIVOR loads and sets up Apple's MusicKit script from Apple's servers, even if you never connect. If you choose to connect Apple Music through YOUR LIBRARY, you sign in with Apple directly and your library is read inside your browser. Your library and listening history are not sent to our server. We only note that a library run started, which list you picked and how many songs it used, never the song or artist names.
- jaim.es. The KARAOKE BAR loads its songs, videos, artwork, lyrics and a script from jaim.es, another site run by the maker of Sound of Sliver.
- Your browser's push service, only if you turn on reminders. Reminders are delivered through the push service built into your browser.
- Social networks, only when you press something. Share and follow buttons open X, Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, Spotify or Apple Music in a new page or app. No social network's scripts, buttons or embeds are loaded in the game.
How we use it
- To run the game and keep the leaderboards.
- To connect a device's days for streaks, bonuses and the running totals.
- To stop cheating and abuse. For example, we limit how many scores one IP address can save in a day, and we check that a share bonus comes from a different device and network.
- To find and fix bugs.
- To learn which songs are hard, what people play, and how people find the game.
- To read your feedback and answer it.
- To email you, only if you signed up.
- To send reminders, only if you turned them on.
Selling and ads
We don't sell your data. There are no ads in the game, and we don't share your data with advertisers or ad networks.
Our social accounts
We make Sound of Sliver videos with our own internal tools, and only we can reach them. To post one of those videos to our own TikTok and Instagram accounts, we send Zernio, a social media posting service, the video's address on our site and its caption. Zernio holds the sign-in to those two accounts. It fetches the video from our site and posts it publicly, at a time we pick, or to our TikTok drafts for us to finish in the app. Our server keeps our Zernio API key, the id, handle, display name and profile picture address of each account we've connected there, and a log of what we sent and what Zernio answered. Disconnecting deletes the key and the account details. No player data goes to Zernio.
Players never sign in to TikTok or any other social network through this site, and we don't collect players' social media data. When you press a follow button, we note that you pressed it so we can add the bonus points. We never see your account on that network.
We do keep a log of public web pages and public Reddit and Bluesky posts that mention Sound of Sliver, so we can follow what people say about the game. For each one we keep its link, when it was posted, its title and the first few hundred characters of its text. For a Reddit or Bluesky post we also keep the author's public handle, and for Reddit the subreddit.
How long we keep it
Most of what we store has no set expiry. Scores and leaderboards are meant to last, and the rest stays until we delete it. A few things do end on their own:
- A reminder subscription is deleted when you turn reminders off in the game, or when your browser's push service tells us it no longer exists.
- A recovery code stops working after 30 days, though our record that it was made, with your player id, IP address and user agent, is kept like the rest.
We back up our server every night. The backups are kept for 60 days on the server, for a year on a separate computer of ours, and in an encrypted archive for up to about three years. When we delete something, older copies can remain in those backups until they age out.
Your choices
- Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes your player id and everything else the game keeps on your device. The game starts over with a new id. Scores you already saved stay on the boards.
- You don't have to give your initials. Your first finished game on each board is saved, and without initials it shows as ??? with your city label.
- You can turn reminders off in the game's preferences, which deletes your subscription from our server. You can also block notifications in your browser settings.
- To come off the email list, contact us and we'll remove your address.
- To get a copy of what we hold about your device, or to have a leaderboard score or anything else corrected or removed, contact us. Tell us the day and the initials, or anything else that helps us find it, and we'll do it by hand.
Children
Sound of Sliver is a game for a general audience. It isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child under 13 has given us an email address or other information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
